"
When I moved to Pierre in 1968, it didn't take long to realize that this was, indeed, a fishing and hunting paradise. That's why I decided to stay here.
Consider the fishing. Lakes Oahe and Sharpe, two of the gigantic Missouri River reservoirs, are outstanding walleye fisheries. Oahe also produces king-size northern pike, as well as chinook salmon and rainbow trout. Sharpe is also blossoming into a world-class smallmouth bass fishery And stock ponds west of the Missouri River provide great largemouth bass and panfishing.
And how about the hunting? The nearby Fort Pierre National Grasslands (116,000 acres of public land) offer the best public land prairie grouse hunting in the world with both sharptails and prairie chickens. Pierre is a half-hour away from South Dakota's best pheasant range, and in the fall, hundreds of thousands of ducks and geese gather on the giant impoundments on the Missouri River. Big game hunting (mule deer and whitetails, as well as pronghorn antelope) is superb.
Pierre and Fort Pierre are great host cities for visiting outdoorsmen. Terrific restaurants, hundreds of motel rooms. Resorts on the big lakes. Three fine golf courses, wonderful biking and hiking trails and lots of history. Lewis & Clark nearly tangled with the Teton Sioux at the mouth of the Bad River in Fort Pierre.
